Nadine Ochmann examines the understanding of health and health behaviors among incarcerated women, as well as the health-promoting conditions in prisons. In this context, female inmates were questioned about their subjective attitudes and individual needs, as well as their experiences with healthcare provision. The findings reveal that incarcerated women show a strong interest in their own health, and their health behavior improves while in custody. However, their overall health condition, particularly their psychosocial well-being, deteriorates. The author demonstrates that intramural health promotion is possible and already exists in several areas. There is significant potential for improvement, especially concerning the health needs related to self-determination and participation.
