Since as early as the 8th century, the knowledge of healing powers from nature has been researched in many monasteries and used in the care of the sick. Much of this was forgotten in the course of medical research. But in recent years, interest in a holistic view of human health has grown again. Year in, year out, many visitors therefore come to Reute Monastery to explore the apothecary garden with its various areas, the plant labyrinth or the tactile path, or to seek advice. Since the Franciscan nuns of Reute Monastery in Upper Swabia have always been dedicated to nursing the sick, the ancient knowledge of monastic medicine has been preserved and practised here. The model for this was and is St. Francis, for whom the whole of creation forms a great unity in which God's traces can be found. Following in his footsteps, the Franciscan Sisters invite us to get to know and love plants anew in order to use their healing power. Sr Birgit Bek, a trained expert in medicinal plants, has revived this monastic tradition. In this great medicine chest she presents the wealth of her knowledge and experience. She describes what herbs of all kinds, berries, nuts and spices do and what is effective against which ailment. Simple applications such as teas, tinctures, oils, ointments and many more are explained step by step. The culinary aspects are not neglected either. A treasure for body and soul!
