What influence did National Socialism have on gender relations? The role of women in Nazi society and their involvement in the Nazi persecution and murder policies has been explored for some time. In addition, critical masculinity studies have examined stereotypical images of soldierly masculinity. Nevertheless, both lines of research have primarily focused on women and men "among themselves," and the "people's community" as a "gender community" has been far less frequently considered. The contributors ask what gender-specific expectations were directed at men, women, and couples within the "people's community," what spaces for action were opened or closed to them, and what dynamics were unleashed by the imagined and established orders.
