Geschlecht & Gewalt

This volume documents the results of the research project "Gender and Violence", which was organised by the Elfriede Jelinek Inter-University Research Network of the University of Vienna and the Music and Arts Private University of the City of Vienna. It is dedicated to a central aspect of Elfriede Jelinek's work: the connection between gender and violence. Narratives of gender and its violent nature, especially in times of neo-conservatism, neo-liberalism and right-wing populism, are examined as well as questions of structural, psychological, physical and sexualised violence and mechanisms of exploitation, repression and marginalisation based on the category of gender. The methodology of the research focus - processual procedures and scientific-artistic working groups as well as interdisciplinary and international symposia and workshops with the aim of advancing innovative research positions and experimental research formats and approaches at the interfaces of science and art - is reflected in the structure of the volume. It brings together the articles and discussions of several working groups and symposia that took place as part of the research project in the period 2021-2023 and, in addition to new theoretical approaches and strategies and Jelinek's central positions, is dedicated to five thematic focal points: Right-wing narratives, aspects of structural violence, the artistic representation of violence, capitalist and neoliberal systems, and marginalisation and exclusion as manifestations of violence.
