Since the beginning of the Russian-Ukrainian war in spring 2014 and its escalation in February 2022, ritualised commemorative events, spontaneous rallies and political actions reminiscent of the Second World War have taken place in Lviv's urban space. As a condensed form of communication, these events convey an idea of how the perception of the past war is influenced by the present one. By immersing herself in the specific situations, moods and contexts, Ekaterina Shapiro-Obermair provides an insight into the complex Ukrainian history and conveys how local people negotiate it.
