Geschichte Leipzigs und seiner Umgegend bis zum Ende des 13. Jahrhunderts

The author and historian Heinrich Wuttke (1818 - 1876) describes the history of Leipzig and its surroundings up to the end of the 13th century in this volume from 1873. Around the year 900, a Slavic settlement was established on both banks of the Parthe River. Leipzig was first mentioned in 1015 when Thietmar of Merseburg reported on an urbs Libzi (city of linden trees). The year 1165 is considered the founding year of the city, when Margrave Otto the Rich of Meissen granted the town at the intersection of the Via Regia and the Via Imperii the rights of a city and market. With the founding of the city, two major church buildings were constructed: St. Thomas Church and St. Nicholas Church. The first evidence of the Leipzig mint is found in bracteates inscribed with MARCHIO OTTO DE LIPPI or OTTO MARCHIO DE LIPPZINA from Margrave Otto the Rich.
