A unique historical document. As a child and young man, Sebastian Haffner experienced World War I, the rampant inflation of 1923, the radicalization of political parties, and the unstoppable rise of the National Socialists. Without being politically or racially persecuted, he emigrated in 1938. From his estate, these memories of his first three decades of life were published, which Haffner had written down in England in 1939. This edition has been expanded to include two newly discovered manuscript sections.
