Since when have books existed? How, where, and for what purpose did they actually come into being? The history of the book spans from early forms such as clay tablets and scrolls to the bound book with pages, known as the codex, and up to the e-book of today. For 5,000 years, the book has played an important role in human history. It has been a prerequisite for the development of literature as well as world religions and sciences. Reserved for the elite just a few centuries ago, the handling of books is now commonplace. This presentation focuses on European book history but also frequently considers other regions of the world.
