The origins of Frankfurt should not be sought in that early time when the Germans, still unfamiliar with the comforts and needs of urban living, mostly lived on isolated farms; nor should it be sought in the time when a series of cities were founded by the Romans along the Rhine and Danube; it belongs to a later, Christian-Franconian period. Clovis, the founder of the Frankish Empire, had subdued a large part of the Alemanni after the Battle of Zülpich (496) and thus laid the foundation for Frankish rule over the region of Germany west of the Rhine, which henceforth also received the name of Eastern or Rhine Franks.

The extraordinarily moving early history of the city of Frankfurt am Main is vividly and clearly presented here. The book begins in the time of the Merovingians and ends in the late 18th century. Illustrated with six historical images.
