The History of the German Language, an indispensable standard work for German studies, is now published in its 12th, revised and updated edition. The comprehensive textbook on language history is now divided into two volumes:

The first part offers, in addition to an introduction to questions of language history, a detailed account of the prehistory and history of the German language up to the present. Based on intensive source analyses, the presentation focuses on aspects of cultural and social history. Only the chapters on the Indo-European and Germanic languages already contain important information on structural history.

The second part contains concise yet easily comprehensible descriptions of Old, Middle and New High German in the areas of phonology, graphemics, morphology and syntax. These are not only synchronous descriptions of the respective state of the language, but also the development of the German language structure on all structural levels. The combination of grammatical synchrony and structural diachrony is a particular hallmark of this second part of Schmidt's language history.
