Geschichte 11. Schülerband. Für die Kursstufe in Baden-Württemberg

The emergence of the modern world in the long 20th century and the struggle between totalitarian system designs on one side and liberal democracy of the Western kind on the other are the two themes of the 11th grade.

Students engage with the accelerated change that accompanied industrialization as well as the expansion of political participation, social security, and cultural liberalization in the 19th century. They assess, at an advanced level, the opportunities and risks of these fundamental European and global modernization processes for our present world.

The 20th century is marked by the emergence and spread of a Europe-wide radical nationalism, two world wars, and the elimination of most parliamentary democracies established in Europe after 1919 by left- and right-wing ideological dictatorships or right-authoritarian regimes during the interwar period. Students analyze these developments against the backdrop of the rapid changes of high modernity. They ultimately analyze and evaluate Nazism and Stalinism, as well as mass expulsions, deportations, and genocide, which retrospectively characterize the 20th century as the 'Age of Extremes.'.
