Gerold Plassek is a journalist for a free newspaper, and his life has so far been devoid of highlights. Manuel, 14, whose mother Alice is working abroad for six months, sits in his office, watching him do nothing, unaware that Gerold is his father. Gerold himself has only recently discovered this and has barely recovered from the shock when even more changes come into his life: After he writes a newspaper article about an overcrowded homeless shelter, an anonymous donation arrives there. This marks the beginning of a mysterious series of donations that Gerold can evidently influence with his writing. Gradually, Gerold begins to come to terms with life.
