Author's Note
Stefan Zweig was born on November 28, 1881, in Vienna, lived in Salzburg from 1919 to 1934, then emigrated to England and in 1941 to Brazil. His epic works made him as famous as his historical miniatures and biographical writings. On February 23, 1942, he voluntarily took his own life in Petrópolis, Brazil. His memoirs, "The World of Yesterday," which recount a bygone era, were published posthumously.

Blurb
These memories of a European once again reveal the ease and joy of Vienna and Austria in the years before World War I, a world of security that Stefan Zweig himself experienced, which was able to guarantee individual freedom to some, though not all; they depict the glories and shadows over Europe until sunset, until Hitler's rise to power, until Europe "once again self-destructively tore itself apart in brother wars." Stefan Zweig recorded "The World of Yesterday" as a contemporary witness, capturing not so much his own fate but that of his generation; with this book, far beyond the personal, he created a compendium of the intellectual world in the first half of our century.
