The Gothenburg publisher Martin Berg is in a crisis: the publishing business is stagnating, Martin's wife Cecilia disappeared from his life years ago without a trace, his grand novel project remains unfinished in a drawer, and his friendship with the celebrated artist Gustav Becker seems to have cooled off for good. While Martin sinks into memories of his student days in the Gothenburg and Parisian bohemia, his daughter Rakel sees her missing mother’s eyes at every street corner, whose portrait adorns the poster of a major Gustav Becker retrospective. When Rakel believes she recognizes Cecilia in the novel of a Berlin writer, it seems time to finally dispel the shadow that hangs over their family.
