The subject of this book primarily revolves around the typical attitudes of consciousness, namely introversion and extraversion, as well as the orientation functions: thinking, feeling, sensation, and intuition, along with their corresponding compensations in the unconscious. Introversion and extraversion—terms that have now entered common usage—are illustrated with examples from ancient and medieval intellectual history, literary history, aesthetics, poetry, philosophy, biography, and psychopathology. A comprehensive chapter is dedicated to characterizing the individual types. Understanding these differences is significant not only for psychologists and psychotherapists but also for laypeople, as it aids in better understanding others and oneself, and helps to overcome prejudices. The definitions of the most commonly used psychological terms by C.G. Jung are included as a special chapter in this volume.
