In developing this textbook, all those involved have jointly pursued the goal of presenting the new standard work of German-language geriatrics. It covers the entire range of diseases in old age and geriatric syndromes, including nutritional and metabolic disorders, mobility disorders, infectious diseases, tumor diseases, cardiovascular and vascular diseases, neurological diseases, the various forms of cognitive decline, as well as sarcopenia and frailty. Other essential topics include functional assessment, polypharmacy, and palliative care for the elderly patient. The book conveys an understanding of geriatrics as interdisciplinary and interprofessional complex medicine with the aim of treating elderly patients in the best possible way to maintain or improve their quality of life. Finally, biological, epidemiological, and political aspects of aging are reflected upon.
