Product details

The Rhineland was the ideal environment for Gerhard Richter's work to flourish since his move from Dresden in 1961. Here, he encountered like-minded individuals such as Sigmar Polke and Konrad Lueg, as well as role models and figures of inspiration like Joseph Beuys, and ultimately a curious and dynamic group of collectors that had formed around the young galleries in Düsseldorf and Cologne.

In this large-format lavish volume, around 100 works from 40 private collections provide insight into all of the artist's work groups, from the early paintings based on photographic templates to the later abstract images, with which Gerhard Richter concluded his painterly oeuvre in 2017. Featuring essays by Dietmar Elger, Markus Heinzelmann, and Heike van den Valentyn. Gerhard Richter (*1932) grew up in Dresden and attended the local art academy. After fleeing from East Germany, he went to the Kunstakademie Düsseldorf, where he held a professorship in painting from 1971 to 1993. He lives and works in Cologne.
