Product details

In 1906, the German writer Gustav Frenssen published his book "Peter Moors Fahrt nach Südwest" (Peter Moor's Journey to the Southwest). What appears to be the real-life account of a soldier from the "Sea Battalion" in Kiel during the Herero War of 1904 in the so-called "protectorate" of German Southwest Africa, recorded by an author in the homeland after the return of the war participant, is actually fiction. However, this fiction is based on the actual experiences of several participants in the war, from the chief medical officer to the ordinary soldier. Gustav Frenssen (1863-1945), initially a typical national conservative of his time, was highly popular as an author during the imperial era and was even nominated for the Nobel Prize in Literature. In the years following 1933, he made an infamous career, including as an official of the Reich Literature Chamber under the Nazi dictatorship. Despite all the political missteps in the last third of his life, Frenssen's book is a highly readable document of the historical period of colonialism in the German Empire. This is a complete edited reissue of the original from 1906, with supplementary texts, illustrations, maps, and notes.
