GEO EPOCHE "The War in Vietnam": On the morning of March 8, 1965, 3,500 US soldiers leap from their landing boats onto the fine sand of the beach near the port city of Da Nang. Smiling Vietnamese girls drape flower garlands around their necks and hold up a sign that reads in English: "Welcome to the chivalrous Marines." In this seemingly peaceful idyll, the fateful moment of a century-long conflict unfolds: The United States is sending its first official combat troops to Vietnam. Shortly thereafter, they engage in the first battle against communist forces – and they win. American military personnel and politicians are almost euphoric. They believe that in no time, they will win the war. It is a fatal misconception for all sides. For this war is unwinnable.
