In Switzerland there are over 2500 self-help groups in the health and social sectors. Their number has almost doubled in the last ten years. This study shows the current situation, the benefits and the limits of community-based self-help in Switzerland and deals, among other things, with the following questions: How do participants and experts view self-help groups? What is the significance of community self-help for health care, the social sector and prevention? How does community self-help in Switzerland compare internationally? What is the significance of professional support and promotion of self-help groups through the 20 regional self-help centres and self-help Switzerland? What are the prospects for community self-help? The study is based on a written and oral survey.
