Zygmunt Bauman, born in Poznan in 1925, taught sociology at the University of Warsaw from 1954. In 1968 he went to Israel. In 1971 Bauman was appointed to the Chair of Sociology at the University of Leeds, which he held until 1990. Bauman was awarded the Amalfi Prize in 1989 and the Theodor W. Adorno Prize in 1998.
