This catalog book accompanies the extensive exhibition "Birth Culture. On Giving Birth and Being Born," which was realized by the Women's Museum Hittisau in 2020/2021 and received enthusiastic responses from both the public and the press. Birth concerns us all. Like death, it affects every human being without exception. The conditions surrounding pregnancy and childbirth shape our lives. Birth culture is the way in which a society shapes the beginning of life and the framework it creates for this. The topic of birth culture is explored in this book from many different perspectives - from physiological aspects to cultural-historical approaches and ideological appropriations. Human rights and birth also play a role, as do numerous artistic approaches.
