In Suriname, the former Dutch colony in South America, languages and religions, skin colors and ethnicities blend together. In Paramaribo, the women of the Vanta family live across three generations, from the terminally ill Grandma Bee to her lovingly cared-for granddaughter Imker, from mother Louise, who raises four children on her own, to her daughter Heli, who is sent to the Netherlands due to a forbidden affair. They are all searching for belonging, all dreaming of a better life. "Broken-White" is a polyphonic chorus of female narratives, whispered and shouted, cried and celebrated. Astrid H.
