For Sabbaths and holidays, family celebrations, housewarmings, and funerals, German-speaking Jewish prayers have been composed over the last two hundred years to prepare the worshippers. Although they were very popular, they rarely made it into Jewish prayer books. Hebrew blessings and their German translations for those called to the Torah reading in the synagogue are also seldom printed in classical Jewish prayer literature. Estrongo Nachama, who served as the chief cantor for half a century in the Berlin synagogue on Pestalozzistrasse, has collected this prayer literature. The collection is suitable for use by cantors, rabbis, and gabbaim in community services, but it also opens the hearts and souls of individual worshippers to prayer.
