Gabriele Stötzer - Künstlerbücher / Artist Books '82-88

This publication brings together for the first time 13 unique artist's books with photographs, drawings, prints, and texts by Gabriele Stötzer, one of the most important German feminist artists of her generation. These works were created between 1982 and 1988 and open up a fascinating and diverse cosmos of images of her artistic work and personal experiences. Bound with chicken rings, staples, or carpet tape to form photo tableaux in foil pockets or on cardboard as well as leporellos, these books were self-published, bypassing the strictly controlled GDR publishing system. With the female body and its inherent potential to question gender roles, this medium reflects Stötzer's unadjusted and hard-won freedom of life and, now officially published for the first time, unfolds its full power.
