When the young Berlin doctor Niki Lamont almost causes serious harm to a young man shortly after the fall of the Berlin Wall due to a misdiagnosis, she has no idea that she will one day marry him. The circumstances of their reunion years later are also more than unusual, as is the course of their wedding night. Niki, born in Afghanistan and raised in India and Mexico as a child of German hippies, meets the slightly younger Lu, also in hospital, whose father regularly drinks himself into a coma after the death of her mother. The meeting of the two women, both to a certain extent parentless, has consequences they never expected.
