For more than two years now, we have been experiencing a public debate on educational issues that is characterized by terms such as "educational emergency" or even "educational catastrophe". Based on these discussions, the author asks what criteria there might be for a "good education". The author identifies five factors in education that promote development (emotional warmth, respect and esteem, cooperation, structure and commitment, all-round support) and contrasts them with dimensions that hinder development (emotional coldness or overheating, disregard, dirigisme, chaos and arbitrariness, one-sided and lack of support). "There is hope and courage", writes the author, "to know that even in times of 'education crisis' there are just as good lessons and committed teachers as parents who enjoy bringing up their children, who show love and care for them and feel responsible.
