Product details
Joan Riviere, Grete Bibring, Fanny Lowtzky, Grete Obernik, and Eva Rosenfeld were psychoanalysts of the generation following Sigmund Freud. Born in the late 19th century, they experienced years marked by radical upheavals, yet each found her own remarkable path. Nina Bakman sheds light on their lives and work. Obernik and Lowtzky worked primarily with children in need in Palestine/Israel. Bibring was the first woman to teach as a professor of medicine at Harvard Medical School. Rosenfeld took on difficult-to-educate girls and founded a school with psychoanalytically trained staff. Riviere, the only one who did not have to flee the Third Reich, worked as a translator for the first English edition of Freud's works. All of them worked under challenging historical circumstances for children, for patients, and for psychoanalysis. Each of these women served in her own way – yet not all received the recognition they deserved.
