Product details
Schloss Burg (also known as Burg Castle on the Wupper) is a hilltop castle that was reconstructed starting in the late 19th century in the Solingen district of Burg an der Wupper. The complex served as the ancestral seat of the Counts and later Dukes of Berg since the 12th century. Following the Thirty Years' War, it was dismantled and used only until 1807 as the residence of a Bergisch steward and judge, leading to its gradual decline into a ruin. However, the goal of reconstruction soon came to the forefront, as the architect and author of this volume, Gerhard August Fischer from Barmen, was able to inspire the founding meeting with a wealth of detailed drawings, plans, and designs for a reconstruction. Fischer's reconstruction plans, initially estimated at 100,000 marks, also received support from the provincial conservator Paul Clemen at the time. In 1888, initial clearing and excavation work was carried out in the castle courtyard, uncovering the foundations of the keep that had been hidden beneath a mound of earth and rubble. Starting in 1890, a gradual reconstruction took place by the castle construction association according to Fischer's plans, which were a mix of reconstruction based on historical models and excavation results, as well as imaginative original creations. Schloss Burg was to be resurrected as a Bergisch national monument. This volume is illustrated with 9 black-and-white images. It is a reprint of the second edition of the historical original published in 1901.
