Product details

The company F. Ad. Richter & Cie. is well-known for producing the globally recognized and popular toy – the Anker building block set. In 1869, the universal entrepreneur Friedrich Adolf Richter (1846–1910) opened a grocery store in Duisburg. In 1873, he founded a chemical-pharmaceutical factory in Nuremberg and eventually established a branch in Rudolstadt, Thuringia, in 1877. By the end of the 19th century, Richter's factory had developed into one of the most significant manufacturers of secret remedies in Germany. The formation of two stock corporations in 1921 led to the separation of the production branches of building blocks and pharmaceuticals, thereby averting the company's bankruptcy. In 1953, it was nationalized as the state-owned enterprise VEB Ankerwerk Rudolstadt. The following decades were characterized by the economic policies of the GDR, which aimed to concentrate and specialize pharmaceutical production. As a result, Ankerwerk became the sole manufacturer of eye drops and medical-pharmaceutical aerosols.
