In an apartment in the heart of Reykjavík, a man is found dead - with his throat slit. The perpetrator seems to have known the victim, as there are no signs of a break-in. Commissioner Elinborg discovers a cashmere scarf at the crime scene that emits a strange odor, and in the victim's jacket pocket, she finds a date-rape drug. Erlendur's colleague suspects that the murder was an act of revenge for a brutal crime, and that it was preceded by transgressions that can never be atoned for. While Commissioner Erlendur tries to process his traumatic childhood experiences in the East Fjords, Elinborg investigates a murder case that shakes her to the core.
