Freude und Erholung?

Joy and relaxation – this is what the children's convalescent and recovery homes of the post-war period promised. In the mountains or by the sea, children were meant to recover from illnesses and return to everyday life strengthened. However, the opposite occurred in numerous facilities, where neglect and violence were prevalent. This anthology documents the exhibition of the "Child Evacuation" project by the State Archives of Baden-Württemberg and summarizes the state of research as of autumn 2024. It includes in-depth texts as well as further reflections that place the topic in the context of education, medicine, and archival processing, as well as various forms of residential care for children and adolescents in the post-war period. The suffering of the children is particularly vividly captured through short comics by Birgit Weyhe.
