Religiosity is more vibrant than ever. While sects were in the spotlight at the end of the twentieth century, awareness of the diversity of religious movements has significantly increased today. Individualization and pluralization among religious communities play a major role in this. How do they function? What is the appeal, especially in secularized societies? And where are the boundaries of these communities, particularly in light of the demand for spiritual self-determination? How much freedom does faith need? This issue focuses on the presence of classical sects today, showcases new forms of religious community, and also examines comparable phenomena in traditional major churches and religions – including the topic of spiritual abuse.
