Product details
This volume of the series on the Freiburg Minster addresses a fundamental topic: the stones used in the construction of the Minster. While it is generally known that the Freiburg Minster was built from sandstone, where did the material come from in the Middle Ages, and where does the Minster construction office source it today? How did the stone arrive in Freiburg? Why do some finials last for centuries while others show cracks after just a few decades? A team of authors led by geologist Wolfgang Werner and Minster master builder Anne-Christine Brehm embarks on a surprising investigation into the various quarries in the vicinity of Freiburg, discussing the formation of sandstone, medieval and modern extraction methods, transportation routes, and the placement of materials on the construction site. In addition to sandstone, other types of stone used in and around the Minster are presented. Suggestions for three hiking routes in the book's appendix lead to quarries in Hornwald near Sexau, in Freiamt-Tennenbach and -Allmendsberg, as well as in Teningen-Heimbach, along with an excursion to the former Tennenbach Monastery, providing an opportunity to deepen the understanding of what has been read at the old extraction sites.
