Product details

For a reading sample, see "Fred Stein is one of the pioneers of 35mm photography in the 1930s and 1940s. The photographic uvre of this career changer is a moving and moving testimony to the history of the 20th century; he created impressive views of cities and people. Born in Dresden in 1909 as the son of a rabbi, the convinced socialist was forced to leave his hometown after the National Socialists came to power in 1933. In the hardship of flight and emigration, his outstanding talent as a sensitive portrait and street photographer was revealed. The list of those portrayed reads like a "Who's Who" of the 20th century: Hannah Arendt, Albert Einstein, Willy Brandt, Arnold Zweig, Egon Erwin Kisch, Bertolt Brecht, Marlene Dietrich, Salvador Dalí, Martin Buber, Thomas Mann. His photographs are characterized by deep humanity.
