That the Alpstein is almost exclusively made up of remnants of marine organisms is not immediately apparent. This book draws attention to the numerous traces along the paths around the Säntis, at Altmann, near Wildkirchli, or at Hoher Kasten. Editors Peter Kürsteiner and Christian Klug present the first comprehensive depiction of the fossil world of the Alpstein. Together with 24 experts, they portray the most important fossil groups that observant individuals can easily discover while exploring the nature of the Alpstein. Furthermore, the book provides an overview of the geology of the Alpstein, explains the formation, preservation, and occurrence of fossils, and informs about the current state of regional research on living beings and ecosystems in geological history. In the main section, the individual genera and species are organized by animal groups.
