Agoraphobia and panic disorder are among the most common mental disorders and were considered hardly treatable until the 1980s. Without adequate professional help, individuals and their families typically experience significant impairments in quality of life. In recent years, there have been significant advances in understanding and treating these two disorders, which are taken into account in this revised edition. In particular, findings from basic research on extinction learning and memory consolidation provide important insights for treating avoidance behavior. Accordingly, today—despite the severity and chronicity of these anxiety disorders—extremely successful treatment strategies are available, which are presented in this volume.
