This book provides an overview of the background of activated sludge treatment plants. It presents the significance of wastewater treatment, its history, and the structure of a conventional activated sludge plant. The biochemistry and microbiology of the process are described. An overview of the state of the art in modeling activated sludge plants is also presented and discussed. The chapter concludes that the complexity of ASM1 and the detailed data required for the growth and decay of microorganisms are not attractive to process operators. ASM1 requires the determination of about 31 parameters, coefficients, and variables, most of which are not routinely measured by large treatment plants. Furthermore, a certain number of simplifications and assumptions must be made to make a model of the WWT system practically usable. Some of these are related to the physical system itself, while others pertain to the mathematical model.
