The groundbreaking advances in reproductive medicine and genetic engineering have been posing major challenges to society, politics and the law for a good four decades. The Swiss legislator has recently reacted to developments in the field of genetic testing of embryos in vitro (preimplantation diagnostics) by means of a partial revision of the Reproductive Medicine Act. This commentary is the first comprehensive presentation of the Swiss law on reproductive medicine. In addition to the law, the commentary also covers the constitutional provisions on reproductive medicine and gene technology in the human sector as well as the relevant ordinance law and refers to international regulations. The commentary also contains general descriptions of the medical and genetic foundations, the sociological background, the sources and history of development, as well as the health insurance law aspects of reproductive medicine law.
