Some cultures will be forever forgotten, while others have at least left traces that we can follow. Harald Haarmann discovers Stone Age settlements by Lake Baikal, investigates the mystery of the Pelasgians, the pre-Indo-European population of Greece, finds a historical core in the stories of the Amazon warrior women from the Black Sea, explains the strange culture of Easter Island, which succumbed to self-made environmental problems, and describes the recently discovered remains of large settlements in the southern Amazon region, where only hunters and gatherers were previously assumed to exist in the untouched rainforest. Overall, the 25 special cases show that humanity had more options than we think. In a time when we are becoming aware of the darker sides of our own culture, we should remember the lost paths.
