German driving sports enjoy a high international reputation, not only due to a multitude of successes in all disciplines of driving sports but also because of the widespread and practical application of a logically structured training system for drivers and driving horses. As a result of numerous studies, particularly by the English instructor Howlett, the driving system compiled by Benno von Achenbach received official recognition in 1922. Since then, the Achenbach system has been binding for German driving sports to this day. In industrialized countries, the horse has become completely insignificant as a working animal, yet it is experiencing an unprecedented flourishing in the sporting sector and as a hobby. Competitive driving is practiced at numerous national and international events. Most recreational drivers and also future competitive drivers are not self-taught.
