Carlo Mense (1886 Rheine/Westphalia - 1965 Königswinter) was one of the important protagonists of the Rhineland art scene in the 20th century. His major works hang in the most significant museums in Germany and are still featured in many major exhibitions on modern art today. However, the figure of the artist and his entire body of work have increasingly faded behind the few famous paintings. After studying in Düsseldorf, Berlin, and Weimar, Mense worked in Cologne, where he participated in the essential exhibitions of the then-revolutionary avant-garde art. Before World War I, he was part of the circle of Rhineland Expressionists around August Macke and evolved into a prominent representative of New Objectivity in the 1920s. The exhibition and catalog now offer, for the first time in decades, the opportunity to get to know this versatile artist and his work in all its facets.
