Every policeman's nightmare: When Dave Robicheaux is supposed to transfer two murderers to death row in a Louisiana state prison, the two of them manage to escape. Dave is seriously wounded and his partner is shot. The desire for retribution and the irrepressible will to rehabilitate himself drive Dave from the idyll of the bayous into the shadowy world of New Orleans and right into the heart of organized crime.
