Question: Why did you write this book?
Volker Schmidt: I borrow my answer from a popular advertisement for feminine hygiene products: The history of sexuality is a story full of misunderstandings. We juggle opinions, desires, and moral imperatives, but behind them often lie ignorance, frustration, shame, and/or clumsiness. The result: What could give us feelings of utmost fulfillment and deep connection is, ironically, the trigger for intense and even corrosive conflicts between partners. The suffering that arises from this is not only sad (and very much so), but in my view, often completely unnecessary.

Question: What do you hope to achieve with this book?
Schmidt: I point out that sex is more than just "the most beautiful sideline in the world." Our approach to our sexuality has massive impacts on our health, joy of life, intelligence, attractiveness, and our social interactions. I say: Let’s bring the topic out of the gutter, examine it in the light, and, based on facts and scientific findings, put it back on its feet! I want to free the topic from the emotional weight that often clings to it in public discourse. For so many people, the matter of sex triggers fears, distrust, shame, self-doubt, and discontent. I hope that our sexuality becomes a topic we can laugh about heartily and speak about freely.
