Firmament und Kosmos

Can natural science and theology enter into a substantial dialogue? Continental intellectual history has strictly separated the language games of theology and natural science. In this study, Michael Gerhardt aims to find a dialogue model that can avoid the disjunction of the disciplines - and especially of the concepts of nature and creation. Using biblical scholarly results and methods, Michael Gerhardt uses the example of ancient oriental ideas of firmament to work out the dialogue strategy with which Israel related its own theological convictions to the environment. The result can become a guideline for contemporary theology. It, too, has to communicate theological standpoints in the context of today's scientific thinking and thus in the cognitive horizon of our culture. Using current philosophical aspects, the book formulates a dialogue model that can connect different disciplines against the background of the world view of our time, and tests this concept on an exciting topic of conversation: the history of the origin of our solar system.
