Financial technology innovations (FinTech) are seen as having the potential to compete with traditional financial service providers such as banks, which could eventually lead to the future vision of banking without banks. Christopher Rennig examines the question of whether such a trend can already be observed and what answers current law provides to the challenges associated with such innovations. Taking into account the latest European legal acts as well as the administrative practice of BaFin, he devotes special attention to banking supervision law: Is it already treading the fine line between the greatest possible openness to innovation and simultaneous risk limitation, or is there still room for improvement? The theses raised are not only examined in theory, but are also tested through the economic and legal analysis of practically active FinTech business models.
