The textbook conveys a compact overview of the epochal and national styles of film history on the one hand, and individual styles on the other, whereby other areas of film design such as screenplay, camera, music and montage are taken into account in addition to directing. Beyond the classifications established in film studies, this textbook also highlights stylistic continuities that are illustrated in an epoch-spanning perspective as variants of realism, attraction cinema or minimalism. In addition to the feature film, genres such as documentary and experimental film are also discussed.
