Film Socialisme

A cruise on the Mediterranean: one visits cultural sites, one converts, dines and plays super bingo on deck 5. On board are a war criminal, a French philosopher, a policewoman from Moscow, an American singer, an ambassador. At the cradles of European civilisation, in Egypt, Palestine, Odessa, Hellas, Naples, Barcelona, the paths of tourists and refugees cross. False legends and places of remembrance, antiquity and the Middle East conflict, Islam and Christianity, ideologies, ideals and capital flows overlap in many voices - and freedom, equality and brotherhood are brought before the tribunal of a mercilessly questioning childhood. As a loosely connected "symphony in three movements", Film Socialisme reflects Jean-Luc Godard's latest film. As in the film, so in the book, Godard always moves on a collision course, associating at the limits of the communicable, combining the incongruous, creating dizzying interference. His symphony of multilingual dialogue fragments, quotations, text and image panels, as wild as they are cleverly designed, assembles the identity of a Europe that does not quite know where it is heading.
