Winter 1921, Bloomsbury's bohemian scene is shaken up as the Ballets Russes bring an extravagant new production to the stage of London's Alhambra Theatre - starring the extroverted Russian dancer Lydia Lopokova. In the audience: John Maynard Keynes, the respected economist, although he expects little from the evening. For despite Lydia's numerous triumphs, including the title role in Stravinsky's "Firebird", Maynard considers her a "miserable dancer". On this evening, however, he is moved by her performance, and the man, who has hitherto had exclusively homosexual liaisons, falls madly in love with the prima ballerina.Their unlikely affair, then their unexpected marriage in London in 1925, which astonishes and moves all of England, becomes the most surprising love story of its time.
