Gdańsk, a city on the Gdańsk Bay, near the mouth of the Vistula River into the Baltic Sea, was for centuries the wealthiest city in the Republic of Poland. Its origins date back to the time of Mieszko I, who conquered this part of Pomerania between 967 and 972. At the site of today's Długi Targ, at the mouth of the Motława River into the Martwa Wisła, he founded a fortress with a harbor. The name of the settlement "Gyddanzyc," first mentioned in "Żywot św. Wojciech," which Gdańsk visited before the Christianization expedition to Prussia, is derived from the word used by the Prussians to refer to the Motława. Its root "gd" meant mud or moisture. During the Piast dynasty, the relations between Gdańsk and Poland were quite turbulent. The division of the state into districts was not conducive to maintaining relations with Pomerania.
